Exile

My long journey is done,
and now I seek only rest
for my weary soul--
no more shall I quest,
seeking that which is not
my destiny...
I have defied fate on all my
twisting paths,
be they by the sea,
or under shimmering stars
in chilling desert winds...
I have defied destiny,
hurling my challenge
against the eternal night,
fighting, trying, refusing to accept
the fate of being alone,
without a wife, children;
without a home...
But, each time it seemed I would succeed,
I would but fail,
thwarted by merciless fate;
and now, weary in mind
and soul,
I resign myself to
exile from love
and
solitude from life... July 16, 1975
