In January of 2005, I wanted to connect my large laser jet and ink jet
printers - but had no place to put them. That's when I
realized that I had a fair amount of two-by-fours and plywood left over after
building STella's configurable bunkbed. Voila; one printer stand!
I had already built the frame when I realized I hadn't taken any pictures; however,
the dado joins were done in the same manner that I used for STella's bunkbed.

The plywood is construction grade material, which is very strong, but
also very rough. A 4x24 inch Porter Cable™ belt sander a with 80
grit belt, followed by 120 grit belt. I then cut the corners so the shelf
would fit around the two-by-fours, and finished the sanding using a 1/2
pad sander. That took care of the roughness very nicely.

I used 3/8 inch plywood for the bottom shelf, as all it has to support
is my paper tray. I checked the fit of the first shelf: No trimming needed,
so after I took this picture, I used Gorilla Glue™ and
brass wood screws to anchor the shelf.

My large format ink jet printer is rather heavy, so I used 3/4 inch plywood
for the top shelf, and anchored that with Gorilla Glue and brass wood screws
as well.

I completed assembly early afternoon on a Saturday. By Sunday morning,
the glue had dried. I used a water-based dark walnut stain first and wiped
it dry 10 minutes after applying the stain liberally. It was very sunny
outside, so I let it dry for about an hour, and then applied three coats
of Danish Oak oil stain at 10 minute intervals.
It was dry by the time I got off work the following Monday - so I brought
it upstairs, put in in place with the laser and ink jet printers, and moved
my paper tray onto the bottom shelf. If you're wondering, yes, that is a rack to the right of the stand.

Mou and I have slowly but surely been reorganizing and remodeling the
house. In early October of 2005, I built a shorter CPU stand to go
over the record player that is to the immediate left of the printer stand.
Pictures of that stand will be posted when I complete reorganizing my workspace.
